Dr. Fred Starr has helped thousands of individuals suffering from a wide range of psychological disorders using cutting edge mental health treatments. Dr. Starr is the medical director of 5 Starr Psychiatry & Neurofeedback. He is president of The Tennessee Chapter of The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and an active contributor to the Middle Tennessee Autism Foundation.

Dr. Starr has written many articles for peer reviewed scientific journals, as well as local and national newspapers and magazines. Currently, he has a book in print entitled: Cutting and Related Disorders. Dr. Starr has appeared in numerous television shows including The Learning Channel’s Resident life, Channel 5 News, and a nationally syndicated medical show.

Dr. Starr uses a systematic, scientific approach to diagnose and treat psychiatric illness by examining the potential causes of specific symptoms. Recognizing the interaction between the external environment and its connection to a person’s mind, body, and soul he is able to effectively treat mental illness.

Dr. Starr helps his patients by treating the underlying problems causing their symptoms, thus reducing or eliminating their need for conventional psychiatric medications. He has extensive experience and success in treating ADD, AHDD, Alzheimer’s, Autism and minor brain damage.

Dr. Starr holds a B.S. in biology from Syracuse University, and an M.D. from The New Jersey Medical School. He completed his adult psychiatry residency at Boston University Medical Center, and his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Department, where he also served as chief fellow.

Dr. Starr has completed specialized training in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy. He is certified in Quantitative Electroencephalography and Neurofeedback by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America. Dr. Starr has a special interest in treating Autism, Epilepsy, and Attention Deficit Disorder.

Dr. Starr founded The Anna Starr Foundation after suffering the tragic death of his six-year-old daughter Anna due to complications of epilepsy. The Anna Starr Foundation exists to treat and study new treatments for this debilitating disorder.

Dr. Starr lives in Nashville, TN. He has two sons, and enjoys yoga and windsurfing in his spare time.
